Learning is a mixed media additive sculpture. It represent me growing and learning more about myself little by little. Currently I am going through a lot of stress and anxiety. At many points I've had breakdowns and panic attacks. This piece is made with old homework and to me this represents the amount of school work teachers are trying to build me from. School is my main focus at the moment and I want to learn. But there's more stressing me out such as relationships with my friends and my parents. The purpose that this is not a complete body is to show that I have not completely figured myself out, and what I want to do in life. This inspiration came from Richard Brelix. I think that I have a creative side to myself and I represent it under the inspiration of "Sunrise" by Nino Anin. As the sun rises I believe it represent a new beginning and being able to find myself again after all this chaos is important. Currently I am doing better and have improved.

Annette XIV Burned with necklace. Modelled in clay, cast in paper and polyester, soaked with petrol and burned 102 x 48 x 50 cm

Richard Brixel is a Swedish mixed media sculpture. He is known worldwide for his massive, detailed and intricate sculptures. His art is inspired by life as: dance, love, meetings, friendship, joy, power, oppression, liberation, death and what may come after Most of them are made out of clay. In his piece called “Annette XIV Burned with necklace” is made from clay, cast in paper and polyester, soaked with petrol and burned. Detail is very important in all of his pieces. This piece has a lot of detail and texture produced by the fire and the aftermath of it being lit. This piece so has a white bead necklace, which I'm not sure if it was also lit in life but it seems undamaged. Things that I want to take from this artist is the texture and detail he has in his work. I don't plan on setting my house on fire. I do want to add texture by using paper and a mix of water, glue and flour. This mixture is to create the body. Adding layers and shaping the paper. Similar to his piece the body is incomplete, and I want to add that into my piece. The meaning of my piece is figuring myself out. I have not yet completely figured out myself, in a way of my connection with people and what I plan on doing in the future. I’m currently under self construction, and by not having a complete body I show that I am still not complete. School stresses me out a lot, not only is it the work but also the students and the friendships. I am currently going through a lot of pressure. The paper i am using is old homework or books from school. Currently all I have in mind is school work and I believe that we are built with knowledge. Learning is very important to me. |
"Sunrise" by Nino Anin, Mixed Media on Canvas
32" x 40" https://www.madgallerymilano.com/nino-anin |
Nino Anin is a German mixed media artist. “Sunrise” by Nino Anin is acrylic and gold leaf on canvas. This piece is a Romantic painting, nature. Nino Anins piece is inspired by Nordic Romanticism Painting, she believes that by painting nature or a landscape she is able to connect it with, spiritual attitude and her point of view of the phenomena of the surrounding reality. In this painting there is dimension and texture, it is her perspective of nature, rather than a static phenomenon. Nino Anin illustrates a sunrise she used a wide variety of colors (blues, reds, yellows), when she uses wide and quick brushstroke, overlapping the colors. This creates movement in her piece.
The way I want to interpret “Sunrise” in my piece is the variety of colors. Using acrylic paint I want to mix it in my mixture of paper, glue and flour. When I add my body and texture I will be adding the color as well as texture. Similar to a sunrise I want to add a sun in the center of my piece (torso). The use of colors representing a sunrise on my piece is what I want to use. I want to show that I have a creative side to myself. The sunrise to me represents a new beginning. Currently I am trying to figure myself out and change for the better, a sunrise represent the beginning to a new day a new start. |

process
Skeleton
Using my little brothers clothes as a reference for the length of my wood. I laid down the clothes measured out and marked the wood and then cut it using a hand saw. Once my piece was standing and in the position I wanted it to be in I had to give it form.

Using the wire I added dimension on to the skeleton. I created a rib cage and made the legs look more wider and rounded than rectangular. I began this by twisting the wire tightly onto the wood and wrapping it around. I found out that using smaller pieces of wire made it easy to control and bend. The wire wasn't perfectly wrapped around, I didn't add breast to my person. The reason is because I didn't want it to be completely perfect. This to me represents how I personally see my body. My body isn't the nicest but it has flaws. With the idea of working on myself to become better, I want to improve my view on my body. Being more content with what I have rather than creating a perfect figure that I don't have.
Creating my mixture for my paper. The mixture was half water and half flour and some glue, I added more or subtracted in order to create a paste. The reason I knew how to make this was because this is how pinatas are made, and I had made some before. Using my old homework I teared it into long strips. I dipped them into the mixture and rinsed the extra off. I applied every strip, beginning and wedging it around the wire. I kept layering the pieces until I was satisfied with the body. I then smoothed down some of the rough edges of the papers down.
Now I had to wait for it to dry down in order to begin painting it.
Once it dried down I mixed my paint into a wide variety of bright colors. Using a wide brush similar to Nina I began painting my person. Using quick brushstrokes, I created something similar to her piece. The sunrise was at my chest.
When the paint dried down I added my necklaces to the piece, it has a pendant of the sun and moon. This means balance. Similar to Richard Brixel he has a necklace in his art. This necklace I got from my sister when she went to Mexico. It represents balance, something I am trying to achieve in life. Learning to balance out my time, happiness, friends, and responsibility.

experimentation
When I first put my skeleton together I used screws, at first i worked very well until I had to move it. When I lifted it up the screws worked as joints and allowed the body t move. This wouldn't have been too good if the skeleton was moving while the paper stayed stiff. This could have cause the paper to rip or the body. In order to keep it stiff I used wood glue, which worked really well.

The wire wasn't part of the original plan until I began to think the amount of layer I would need of paper to give the skeleton figure. I added wire in order to fill it up more and make things a lot more easier.

compare and contrast
Richard Brixel has a lot of texture, and I believe that in my piece I also have texture. Maybe not as detailed as his but there is some. Comparing the sculpture the body isn't completely recognizable as a body, this is my first time attempting to make a body. Comparing it to his work he creates massive sculptures with clay, wires, and fire. Most of his pieces are just one color but mine has many colors. In his piece he has a head but the reason mine doesn't have one is because currently I wanted to emphasize that my mental health isn't where it should be. And currently it has became a struggle for me to deal with myself. Having no head is how I represent myself at the current moment.
Nino Anin works on canvas, on flat surface and adds texture with acrylic paint. I add texture although I painted on a 3-dimensional object. She also has a wide variety of color that creates movement. In my piece there's color, but not as much as hers. I tried to create the sunrise on the chest of my person. This is because I want to represent a new beginning by my heart. Her piece is related to romanticism and I wanted to relate this to my heart. I currently want to love myself more and appreciate myself more.

Reflection
As I began to plan this I did not consider how hard it could have been to create a large piece. When I began creating it I had to confront some obstacles but I found solutions and I experimented. The process was long and I had to be patient. In my outcome my piece had texture and movement such as my inspiration. Things that I could work on is the body having a more body figure, I could do this by adding more wire and paper. Something that I want to content with the sunrise I painted. Abstract is something very complicated it can either be a masterpiece or very messy and confusing. I feel like I could fix it by adding lighter colors and more layers of colors.
act questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
As I researched for inspiration both of these artist have made a lot of pieces of art. I had to look through their online gallery and pick the piece I liked the most and wanted to influence in my piece.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
Brixel mainly focuses on detail when creating his pieces and used many different elements in his art work. He mainly focused on crating art that would inspire people or help them figure out who they were. Nino created nature and landscape on a canvas with texture, she created it so people will see it and have a spiritual connection with her piece.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I've understood that many artist create art in order to help people. They create their ideas and present them to people and expect them to have a deep connection to their piece. Art is a way for people to connect and communicate.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?.
From my research I have realized that texture and detail are very important in mixed media. It can create movement and draw attention to a piece. It shows that work and time were put into a piece or art.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inference that Brelix motive in art is to help people, his art is inspired by daily things, such as love, dance and joy. This allows viewers to relate and reflect on his art. Nino creates her pieces from he perspective of nature, her art is to connect with people.
